Most couples who have regular unprotected sex conceive within a year. It is reasonable to seek advice after a year of trying, or after six months if the woman is over 35.
See a doctor sooner if
Periods are very irregular or absent; there has been pelvic infection, surgery or endometriosis; there is a known problem on the male side; either of you has a long-term condition or takes medicines that may matter.
The first tests
They are usually simple: a semen analysis, a blood test to check ovulation, and a check of the womb and ovaries by scan. Tubes may be checked later.
What to take to any appointment
Dates of your last several periods; any results you already have; a list of medicines; a note of how long you have been trying.
Ovulation kits and apps
They are widely sold in Sri Lanka. They can help with timing but they do not diagnose anything, and a normal kit result does not rule out a problem.
