Many people now look for a gynaecologist or "VOG doctor" online. A video consultation suits some things well and others not at all.
What works well by video
Explaining results and reports; talking through a diagnosis; comparing treatment options; working out what to ask a clinic; follow-up after a treatment; questions you have not had time to ask.
What does not
Anything that needs an examination, a scan or a test; bleeding or pain that is happening now; anything in pregnancy that worries you now; children under two. Sri Lanka's Ministry of Health telemedicine guideline (2024) says online consultations are not for situations like these.
Not for emergencies, ever. If you are bleeding heavily, in severe pain, or pregnant and worried, call 1990 or go to the nearest hospital.
How to get the most from a call
Book a time when you can be private; have your results and dates ready; write your questions down; if it is a fertility question, both partners on the call helps; ask for a written summary afterwards.
What to check about any online doctor
That they are registered with the Sri Lanka Medical Council and show the number; what they will and will not do by video; the fee before you pay; how to cancel.
This article is general information, not advice about you. Not for emergencies. Call 1990.
