How much does IVF cost in Sri Lanka, and what the price includes

IVF prices in Sri Lanka are quoted per cycle and vary widely. What is usually in the price, what is often extra, and what to ask before you pay.

The cost of IVF is one of the questions people in Sri Lanka ask most often. The honest answer is that there is no single price. Clinics quote per cycle, the figure depends on which medicines you need and what is added on, and the ranges published by clinics themselves are wide. One Colombo centre publishes a range from about Rs 750,000 to Rs 2,000,000 per cycle including medicines, monitoring and procedures; most clinics ask you to call.

What is usually in a quoted IVF price

The medicines to stimulate the ovaries, the scans and blood tests during the cycle, egg collection, the laboratory work to fertilise the eggs and grow embryos, and the embryo transfer.

What is often extra

Medicines if you need more than the standard dose, ICSI (where a single sperm is injected into each egg), freezing of extra embryos and the yearly storage fee, a frozen embryo transfer in a later cycle, genetic testing of embryos, and the consultation and tests you have before the cycle starts.

Questions to ask any clinic before you pay

  1. Is this the price for one complete cycle, from the first injection to the embryo transfer?
  2. What happens to the price if the cycle is stopped early?
  3. Are medicines included, and what happens if I need more?
  4. Is ICSI included or extra, and do you think I need it?
  5. What does freezing cost, and what is the storage fee each year?
  6. What is the cost of a frozen transfer later?
  7. Can I see the full price list in writing?
