Two treatments come up again and again when couples in Sri Lanka search for help conceiving: IUI and IVF. They are very different.
IUI (intrauterine insemination)
Prepared sperm is placed into the womb around the time of ovulation. Often combined with tablets or injections to help an egg release. It is simpler, cheaper and less invasive than IVF. It suits some situations and not others.
IVF (in vitro fertilisation)
The ovaries are stimulated with injections, eggs are collected under sedation, fertilised in the laboratory, and an embryo is put back into the womb. Much more involved, much more expensive, and the right answer for some couples.
How to compare them for your situation
- What is the reason we are not conceiving, as far as the tests show?
- Given that reason, which treatment do you suggest first, and why?
- What is the chance of a pregnancy per attempt for a couple like us? Ask for the clinic's own figures for your age group, not a national average.
- How many attempts would you suggest before changing plan?
- What does each attempt cost, all in?
